WHO WE ARE
The Los Angeles World
Affairs Council is Southern California's pre-eminent public affairs forum,
and one of the leading organizations of its kind anywhere in the U.S. For
more than 55 years, this member-supported, non-profit, non-partisan
organization has endeavored to "bring the world to Los Angeles" in an
ongoing effort to promote greater understanding of important issues and current world
affairs.
We do this by hosting a series of unique gatherings throughout the year
where prominent speakers, including top political figures and office
holders, business leaders, decision makers and an array of recognized
experts present their views and share detailed knowledge on a
wide range of timely topics. Notably, more than 250 heads-of-state,
international policy makers and top government officials have addressed the
Council during its five-plus decades.
OUR MEMBERS are among the most well-informed, well-read and
well-educated citizens of
this (or any) community. Our membership includes top business
leaders, political figures, philanthropists, educators, investors,
entrepreneurs and a wide range of forward-thinking individuals who share a
common desire for knowledge gleaned directly from the source, and an opportunity to interact with
other recognized world-class leaders of every description.
Members attend Council events to hear the latest, most accurate, most
up-to-date information about topics of global import, from an array of personalities,
professionals and pundits including top
political leaders, business executives, recognized experts and other
notables.
WHAT WE DO
Each season (September
to July) the Council hosts a series of events (roughly 40 to 50 or more per
season) that feature one or more prominent guest speakers. A brief list of such noteworthy
recent guests would include such
luminaries as Senator and presidential candidate John McCain, former British Prime Minister
Tony
Blair, Senator Dianne Feinstein, nearly every
U.S. President from Dwight Eisenhower to
Bill Clinton and a very wide range of experts in literally
every field of global interest or impact.
Events normally
consist of a three-course meal, an address by the guest speaker and a
question-and-answer session. Links to transcript and video versions of
recent speeches are listed on our home page,
along with links to our robust
collection of archived speeches.
WHERE WE DO IT
Event venues are
primarily located in premier west-side hotels, and occasionally at top
hotels in the downtown Los Angeles area. Member ticket prices
for most events range from around $45 to
$65, depending on venue and whether the event is a luncheon or a
dinner. Members can also purchase tickets for their guests at special
reduced rates.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE:
As an issues-oriented organization, the Council endeavors to facilitate a
thorough and searching examination of the issues of the day, including open
and earnest exchanges of ideas among event attendees. However, the Council
as an organization remains completely impartial and non-partisan at all
times. We do not
endorse or promote any specific view, and do not espouse an official
position on any issue or topic. Speakers and attendees show unwavering respect for those
with differing viewpoints at all times.
